CHANGE WITH THE SEASONS

With autumn now upon us (for everyone in the southern hemisphere that is) it’s important that we work with Mother Nature and change with her seasons.  It certainly makes sense to me, TO GO WITH THE FLOW.

This means making changes to our lifestyle as we shift into autumn.

It is the season of transition from the outdoor busyness of the hot summer months to the quieter, hibernation of the colder months ahead.

A CHANGE OF WARDROBE is inevitable as the temperatures drop and the winds pick up. The crisp early mornings and the cooler evenings mean that we can bring out those favourite jeans and jackets, comfy sweaters and leather boots.  Bring it on, I say!!  Even though I love summer, autumn and winter dressing is so much more fun for me.  Autumn is a great time to start layering without having to “rug up” just yet.

A CHANGE OF DIET means cooking with fresh seasonal produce and remember, local produce is always best.  Although we can enjoy salads pretty much all year around, the root vegetables peak in these cooler months and it’s easy to add to the menu soups, curries and roasted vegies.  Fresh wholesome foods are abundant, so forget fast foods and enjoy the healthy options.  Coming into season are some favourite fruits of mine like pears, persimmons, quinces, kiwifruit and figs.                                                                                                 A CHANGE OF EXERCISE can be forced upon some of us due to the weather. Beach activities become a thing of the past until next summer and swimming is often moved to the local indoor pool.  Daily exercise is recommended by most healthcare experts so let’s get moving.  Exercising for at least 30 minutes/three times a week is the minimum recommended dose and this can mean a brisk walk, or a yoga/stretch class, a gentle jog, or some laps of the pool.  Diarise some “me time” and enjoy the benefits.

A CHANGE OF HEALTH ISSUES can vary from season to season. In Chinese Medicine autumn is related to the metal element and the lung and its related energy system. The lung opens to the nose and controls the skin and is effected by the external environment, especially dryness.

In autumn, dryer weather patterns can aggravate skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and other skin allergies. Acupuncture and herbal treatments can assist in balancing these and so many other health issues.  Mark McAuliffe, Doctor of Chinese Medicine explains that focusing our energy inward makes way for reflection on a personal level.  "Autumn's abundant nature enables us to focus our energy with some quiet reflection.  Allow yourself time to be grounded and centred with daily activities such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, qi gong, reiki and slow, quiet walks in nature while listening to nature".

A CHANGE OF ROUTINE can mean different things to different people. Those hot balmy nights spent out on the deck sipping on a cool drink soon shape shift into cuddling up with a good book and a cup of tea.  Quick cold summer showers are replaced with long hot baths.  You know how it goes … a long hot soak in a tub with a generous sprinkle of Epsom salts, a good dash of coconut oil, a sprinkle of your favourite essential oils, dotted with candle light and infused with the sounds of your favourite tunes and a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door.

A CHANGE OF SKINCARE will depend on what you’re currently using and doing. A change to natural and organic skincare is always a good idea for you and the whole family.  Eliminating nasty chemicals, preservatives and colourings from our food, skincare and body products is essential for a healthy life.

A CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE is always healthy no matter what the season. Looking at another point of view can open our eyes to a different perspective, which can in turn lead to greater understanding and deeper compassion for others.  We can’t change the weather, the shift of seasons and the many changes around us, but we can step into our own power by being in the now.  Being present enables us to change our perspective, our attitude, how we treat others and ourselves.  Let go of the past, don’t worry about the future, and let us enjoy the now.   I recommend it all year around!
